MEET THE NATIONAL OFFICERS

 

 

Chairman Dr Peter Swinyard
Peter was elected National Chairman in 2009.  Under his leadership the Association has increasing membership, national profile and media exposure.  He travels the country lecturing on behalf of the Family Doctor Association when commitments as a full time GP allow. He was  Honorary Secretary from 2006 -2009.  Peter trained in medicine at St Thomas’s London and qualified 1979.  GP Training scheme for 3 years in Colchester and joined a large practice in Swindon in 1985.  In 1995, following a partnership split, he became single handed, taking a partner in 1998.  Now 3 partners, the practice still offers personal doctoring  small practice style while being an accredited training practice.  A Wiltshire LMC member since 1988 serving as vice chairman and chairman.  He was GPC member for Wiltshire and Dorset between 2002 and 2005 and Chairman of the last Premises Subcommittee until 2005. 

Other interests – Cars and motoring journalism, fast motorcycles, slow motor caravans and battling with Beethoven through a piano board.

 

 

 

Vice Chairman  Dr Claire Rushton
Claire is education lead for the Association and works in a two-partner practice in Darwen, Lancashire. She is passionate about training in general practice and enjoys her role as a trainer for the Manchester Deanery working with GP Registrars, FY2 doctors and medical students. Her portfolio includes the Appraisal Logbook, with a print run of 4,000 copies, the e-learning study packs on key clinical topics such as diabetes and mental health, plus the national conference. Claire also chairs the East Lancashire division of the Family Doctor Association.

 

 Dr Rauf Kukaswadia   National Treasurer Dr Rauf Kukaswadia

Rauf is the National Treasurer of the Family Doctor Association.  Most recently he successfully guided constitutional change to ensure even more efficient running for the FDA.  A single handed GP he represents members at the DH quarterly meeting with senior officials, he runs the FDA stand at events and is a long standing member and contributor at the Merseyside FDA Division.  He has been a GP in Liverpool since 1988 and was recently awarded ‘GP of the Year’ by the Merseyside Faculty of the RCGP. As well as being an active member of LMC, and is on the Executive Committee of the Merseyside Division of the Family Doctor Association. Rauf leads on financial matters for the Association.  

 

 

     
 

Joint Honorary Secretary Dr Simon Abrams
Dr Simon Abrams has been a GP at Great Homer Street Medical Centre, Everton, Liverpool since 1997. The small inner-city practice specialises in drug misuse and managing Zero Tolerance patients.

Simon is a founder member of the Association and is currently Chairman of the Merseyside FDA Division. He was elected Honorary Secretary in 2010 and re-elected in 2012.

 His FDA portfolio includes the GP & Public Health Stakeholders and Membership Strategy Group.

Other roles are: Medical Director of Urgent Health UK, Federation of Social Enterprise OOH Services, Executive Member of Liverpool Central Shadow Commissioning Board. He previously worked as Medical Director of the OOH service in Liverpool and Knowsley.  

    Chief Executive Officer  Moira Auchterlonie
 With over 15 years’ primary care experience, degrees in law, leadership and economics, Moira has a wide knowledge of general practice. She set up the Small Practices Association office, is now CEO of the Family Doctor Association and represents the Association at a national level.   Under her leadership, FDA publications have become widely respected for a top tips approach to general practice challenges, she pioneered the VoxDocs opinion brand, and delights in running the friendliest GP events in the UK.

Interests: allotment gardening, learning German, eBay and travel.
